On the other hand, the popularity of laminate floors is rising everyday. This is because it looks and feels almost similar to hardwood floor. It is durable and easy to install. Hardwood floors are more difficult to install and expensive to repair if damaged. A laminate floor is much easier to maintain and clean than a hardwood floor. There are no limitations regarding where they can or cannot be laid. Also, laminate floors are available in various designs and are very easy to fix on any type of floor. Besides, because of the special laminates and treatment given to them, they do not wear easily. They do not get damaged easily either. And even if they do get damaged, it is easy and cheaper to replace them than it is to replace hardwood floors. When it comes to the life of both types of floors, however, it is hardwood floors that seem to last longer, as compared to laminate flooring. However there are many laminate floors available on the market today that also come with the same lifetime warranty.
Traditionally, laminate floors used adhesive glues to bond the edges of the floorboards together. Although effective, the glues could be messy and lost their tackiness over time. Also, this method included an extra step where an additional rubber sealant would be used over the cracks in order to prevent moisture from seeping in. Newer laminate choices use a tongue-and-groove installation method that allows the floorboards to interlock with each other like a puzzle. This method is simple and efficient and has the boards "floating" over the underlayment. To add to the ease of installation, laminate can be installed just about anywhere, including over existing floors and above or below grade applications, such as basements. Hardwood on the other hand, can only be installed in above grade areas.
